On behalf of the History association, Department of History organised Nattugadhiga on 8th June 2015. On the occasion Kovilmala Raja, Raman Raja Mannan , the one and only tribal king of Kerala came to the college to deliver a talk on Identity and Culture of Tribal  People. Visit to Kovilmala Tribal Settlement

On 5th January 2016, thirteen I MA students and teachers of the Department of History visited, Kovilmala tribal settlement. The visit was to get firsthand information about the tribal culture and life. For the first time students got the opportunity to visit a settlement and talk to a tribal king.   The students were excited to see and talk to Kovilmala King Raman Raja Mannan, one and the only tribal king of Kerala. Extension Lecture on Aboriginal People

Extension lecture of the department was initiated with a purpose to go beyond the curriculum. During the academic year 2015-16, lecture was conducted on 19th March. The Meeting was presided over by Dr. Abraham Daniel, former principal and HOD History. Dr. Ani Tresa Ephraim, Associate Professor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady delivered the lecture on the topic, The Question of Adivasi Land in Kerala: Tracing Roots from History. Visit to Tribal Settlement at Edamalakudy

The postgraduate student and faculty of the Department of History made a two-day visit to Edamalakudy Tribal settlement on the 25th and 26th of January 2017. It is a settlement where members of the Muthuvan tribe reside. The purpose of the visit was to study about the socio-economic development and livelihood challenges of the Muthuvan tribe. It is a model tribal village.
Extension Lecture: Permanence and Change in Tribal Health Care Systems

Third extension lecture of the Department was held on 20/2/17. Dr. Vinod Kumar Kallolikal, Associate Professor, Maharajas College, Ernakulam delivered the lecture on “Permanence and Change in Tribal Health Care Systems: A Historical Perspective”. More information about the continuity and change in the tribal health care system was provided by the expert. The talk was very informative and useful. Eighty students attended the programme.
Visit to Valpara Tribal Settlement

Annual visit of the tribal settlement was conducted on 21st April 2018. 2 Staff and 12 students of the Department of History visited, Valpara, an Urali Settlement in Idukki district. The intention of the visit was to have a better understanding of the Urali tribal culture and life and their developmental issues. Students visited many Kudis and conducted interviews.

Njandukulam is a tribal settlement near Mamalakandam in Ernakulam District.  It is an abode of Muthuvan and Mannan tribes. On 31st June 2018, 2 teachers and 4 students from the college visited Njandukulam settlement and met their Mooppan Mr. George to know about their problems and challenges. Reaching there, the team conducted a socio-economic survey of the settlement. The NSS unit of our college visited Njandukulam tribal settlement which is a small village inside Mankulam forest range. This region is an abode particularly of Muthuvan and Mannan tribes.  They were just a group of fifteen to twenty families inhabiting in the forest. In the rainy season they remain in their huts without much food. UNNATH BHARATH ABHIYAN SURVEY- PAZHUKKAKANAM

Unnath Bharath Abhiyan survey was held at Pazhukkakkanam, a remote tribal village of our nearby Gramapanchayth (Moonnilavu) on 14th July 2018.  Eleven NSS volunteers participated in the survey. The purpose of the survey was to find the number of extreme poor people in this rural area.

Teachers from the department of history visited Kovilmala, a Mannan tribal settlement and met Ilayaraja on 14th July 2018. He described about their life in their Kudy, customs and traditions. He also talked about their social life and their interaction non-tribal people. He said marriage with non-tribals are at present very high and non-tribals marry Mannan tribes for their landed property. They had a unique custom to protect their people. He also shared his anxiety about their vanishing tribal language.

The members of the NSS Unit and the Programme Officers again visited the abode of the Muthuvan tribe, the Njandukulam Tribal Settlement on July 19, 2018. Our previous effort to make this tribe understand how they were being exploited by the non-tribal people and our earnest request to come out of the forest area and live in the fertile land offered to them by their Chief George had found a favourable effect. They had come out of the perilous forest and were leading a peaceful life with the people of their own community who live outside the forest land.

The third visit to Njandukulam tribal settlement was on 29.09.2018.   Generally  in the rainy season they  are in utter poverty.  During the time of flood their condition became  very pathetic. Teachers and students of NSS unit of the college, collected food and clothing for them and handed over to them on 29.09.2018. 15 NSS volunteers along with Dr. G.S. Gireeshkumar, Principal of the college, Sri. Korah Jacob, Department of Economics, NSS Co-ordinators Dr. Nisha Joseph and Sri. Justin Joseph successfully completed the task.

On 17th April 2019, fifteen first year postgraduate students and two teachers (Dr. Nisha Joseph and Mr. Krishnadas Chinnappan) from the Department of History visited Pattayakudi tribal settlement. Pattayakudi is one of the oldest Urali tribal majority area  in Idukki district.    The team met Ur Mooppan Mr. Jayarajan and Kunjunj (an elder man from the community). Visit to the Tribal Settlement of Kurathikudy

On the 7th and 8th September, 2019, selected members of the NSS Unit and the Programme Officers visited Kurathikudy Tribal Settlement in Adimaly Grama Panchayat. In this remote place 320 families live cut off from the outside world, bereft of the basic facilities of normal life. The visit helped the students to identify the problems they face and think of ways to resolve them.

MA students and teachers of the department visited the tribal settlement at Methotty, near Poochapra on 21st February 2010. This is a settlement where the Uraly and Ullada tribes live. The team got the opportunity to attend the Sivaratri festival of the Muthuvans as well as to see their various art forms. Moreover, they met many elderly people and had interview with them. On the basis of the first visit, the College decided to help them by establishing a library which includes various books on General Knowledge, current affairs, books for competitive exams, novels and story books, books for primary school children, newspapers and Employment News. The room was furnished and 416 books collected from students and teachers of the college, book shelves and other learning materials worth Rs. 150000/- were provided to the Kurathikudy library. It is with great pride that we record that the first graduate from Kurathikudy, Mr. Santhosh Kunjumon was a student of Henry Baker College. He was in our B. A. English Programme during 2013-2016. Santhosh Kunjumon is instrumental in promoting our developmental activities at Kurathikudy Tribal Settlement. He also takes classes for the youth in this settlement, as part of of our training programmes for the youth.

During our third visit to Kurathikudy on 7thMarch 2020 their Kani (head of the Muthuvan tribes, Kurathikudy) Mr. Surya, who supported us in establishing the library, discussed with us the various hazards they were facing in their day today life. Another significant thing about our association with Kurathykudi Tribal Settlement is the presence of the young poet, Christy Elakannan, who belongs to Kurathykudi at our campus. Christy Elakannan is our current student who pursues B. A. Programme in History. Many of his poems are published in online and are widely read.

The NSS Unit of Henry Baker College Celebrated World Environment Day on June 5, 2019.  The programme aimed to safeguard nature, to end pollution and to ensure that environmental laws are upheld. The staff and students planted fruit trees in the college campus and took Suchithwa prathinja.

The main aim of this programme was to promote Environmental Sustainability in young minds. All students and faculty members of the Department of Commerce participated in the programme.
Monsoon Marathon

As part of the Environment Day, a marathon was conducted by the Department of Tourism on 10 June 2019. The motto of the program was ‘Heal the Earth, Heal the Future.’ The marathon was officially inaugurated by the college principal Dr. G. S. Gireesh Kumar. 25 students from different colleges participated in this programme as part of responsible tourism. The first and second prizes were secured by Christ College, Irinjalikuda and Alphonsa College, Pala.
Valicheriyal Muktha Campus-Nagaram [Litter-Free Campus and Town]

After the direction from MG University, Kottayam, our NSS unit had organized Valicheriyal Muktha Campus-Nagaram Programme held on 22nd June 2019.  The Purpose of the programme was to make the pupil aware of the need for cleanliness; otherwise, it can damage our environment and our future. To commemorate Hiroshima day, the Department of Physics organized a poster exhibition in association with Breakthrough Science Society, Kottayam from 10 am to 3 pm. As part of the NSS Camp 2019, the NSS Unit of the college in association with Haritha Keralam Mission and Melukavu Grama Panchayat organized the Meenachil River Cleaning Programme. The activity was inaugurated by Smt. Nisha Joseph (President, Melukavu Grama Panchayath). The NSS volunteers, panchayat members, panchayath staff, and Kudumbasree unit members joined the group. About 6 kilometers of the tributary rivulet of the Meenachil River were cleaned by the group.
ORGANIC FARMING LITERACY AWARENESS SURVEY IN THALANAD GRAMAPANCHAYATH.

JAIVAM Intercollegiate Camp was held at Thalanad Gramapachayath from 25th- 28th January 2018. This camp was a continuation of organic literacy camp (Jaivam 2017) held during September 2017 and  it was attended by 34 NSS volunteers from our college  and they completed awareness survey of 1785 houses at Thalanad.

The NSS unit of our college conducted World Environmental Day celebrations in association with Melukavu Gramapanchayath on 5th June 2018. World Ozone Day Celebration: Focal Theme- Keep cool and carry on! The Montreal Protocol

Department of Physics, in association with Nature club of Henry Baker College, celebrated World Ozone Day on 19 September 2018 with the support of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) based on the focal theme “keep cool and carry on! Nature-walk at Thommankuthu Forest

On January 11, 2018, a group of our students and teachers conducted a one-day Nature-walk in Thommankuthu forest area. The programme was sponsored and organized by the Kothamangalam Division of the Department of Forest and Wildlife, Kerala. A total of thirty-four students and four teachers participated in the programme. The students cleaned the walkway in the ecotourism area also.
Into the Wild: Intercollegiate Nature Photography Contest

The club organised an intercollegiate nature photography contest on January 25, 2018. Twenty participants from various colleges participated in the contest. Seven-day NSS camp was started on 31st August. Nearly 71 students had participated. Organic Farming -Jaiva Nanma Inauguration

The positive result of the organic farming done during the previous year inspired the NSS volunteers to continue this practice on a larger scale. For this ‘Jaivananma’, a programme that included practical organic farming along with the spreading of the message of positive aspects of organic farming was devised. The nature club organised a photography exhibition, Papilio, on 7 & 8 of February 2017 in the New Seminar Hall. Exhibited photos were mainly of the butterflies on our campus and majority from a single bush of common Lanthana (Lanthana Camara). Photographs of dragon flies, reptiles like chameleon, bee hive, frogs etc. too were among the exhibits. All the photos were taken by Albin C. J. of II B. A. English. As part of the photography exhibition, we conducted a Nature Photography Contest and a Friendship Selfie Contest. The winners were presented prizes at the valedictory meeting on 8th at 1.30 pm in front of the Heritage Building.
Tree Labelling Campaign

Tree labelling was yet another project undertaken by the nature club in February 2017. It was true that many of our students and teachers didn’t know the common as well as the scientific names of the trees and plants on our campus. So, we started labelling them on 8th February. A metal plate on which the tree’s local name, English name and scientific name are written was attached to the tree. Almost thirty-five trees and plants were labelled.
Bottle Free Campus: A Campaign against Littering Plastic Bottles

In February 2017, the members of the Nature Club began an eye-opening campaign to make the campus free of plastic bottles, realizing that the thrown away plastic bottles become a curse to the scenic beauty and biodiversity of our campus.  Therefore, the volunteers of nature club decided to collect abandoned plastic bottles on the campus and make our students and staff aware of the rate at which our campus was being littered with plastic bottles. Kirby Garden Renovation

Members of the nature club volunteered to assist the gardeners from outside to replant the Kirby Garden. The Kirby Garden is constructed in memory of our patron Rev. Henry Baker Jr. The garden is named after his native place Kirby, England. A bench too was constructed in the garden. The members of the club raised fund from among teachers and themselves to construct the bench. It was inaugurated by the then Treasurer of CSI EKD Rev. Dr. P. T. George in the presence of our Principal, staff and students.
Pathumaram Padhathi [Ten Plants per Household]

Number of trees planted- 3000 In collaboration with Melukavu Gramapanchayath, the NSS Unit of the college planted 3000 saplings in Ward 10 on 26/07/2015. Ten saplings each were planed around 300 households. The programme helped to create awareness among the people about the need to protect the environment and the role of trees in creating a healthy atmosphere.

Cleanliness drive at college campus on 3/10/2015 The volunteers of the NSS unit of our college cleaned the college premises in connection with the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations. The programme was part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. 75 NSS Volunteers participated in this cleanliness drive and 350 people were benefited.

As part of the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations, the NSS volunteers of the college cleaned roads of the Ward No 10 of Melukavu Grama Panchayat. This programme was also part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Pala- Melukavu road and other byroads of the ward were cleaned by the NSS volunteers. 60 NSS Volunteers participated in the programme and 250 people benefited.
3 Mass Tree plantation programme: Planting trees at college

300 saplings were planted in the college premises on 3 October 2015. 40 NSS volunteers took part in the programme. The programme reiterated the essential value of trees in fostering a wholesome environment.

As an outreach programme, the NSS Unit of the college carried over the slogan “Trees for Healthy Environment” to the nearby village of Edamaruku. On 17 October the NSS volunteers planted around 300 saplings in Edamaruku. The Panchayat Member and the people offered wholehearted support to this noble gesture of preserving a healthy environment.
Nature Education Camp

A Three-Day Nature Education Camp was conducted for our students in association with the Department of Forests, Government of Kerala at Munnar WildLife Sanctuary from 24 to 26 November 2015. 34 students and three teachers (Prof. Ajitha V R, Dr. Santo Jose, Ms. Anumol Sam) participated in the camp. The officials of the Department of Forests led classes on the relevance on Nature in human life and organized trekking sessions for our students.
Organic Farming

The NSS unit of the college started organic farming in the campus in December 2015. Various vegetables and tubers were planted and were grown without using any chemical manure. Organic manure alone was used to assure that the farm products would be completely free from any harmful substance.
