The Research and Postgraduate Department of Commerce was established in the year 1991, to meet the challenges of the emerging scenario in the 21st Century and to optimally exploit the new opportunities in the field of commerce. The Department offers two programmes viz. B.Com (Cooperation) and M.Com(Finance). The Department started the Master’s Degree programme in Commerce in 1999 and in 2013, the department became an approved research centre under MG University Kottayam. The Department is headed by Dr. Santo Jose. It has consistently bagged 100% pass in the university examinations. It has produced a plethora of toppers in the university Examinations year after year, in both B.Com and M.Com programmes. The Department uses advanced technology such as ICT in teaching learning process. The latest publications in the fields of Business Studies, Economics, Commerce and Industry are continually added to the wide range of academic materials in the college library, so that the students are equipped in a better manner.

INTRODUCTION
In keeping with its Vision & Mission, Department of Commerce of Henry Baker College, Melukavu has been elevated as research centre for Commerce approved by Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam vide U O Number 1492/AX/1/2014 dated 12-03-2014 to promote Research in Commerce, create and sustain a research culture, foster research activities among faculty and students. The purpose is to encourage, guide and coordinate the initiatives of the faculty and students towards doctoral research in Commerce, towards major and minor research projects, towards organizing of national and international conferences, towards presentation of research papers and its publication in reputed journals, and similar other research-related matters. OBJECTIVES OF RESEARCH CENTRE OF COMMERCE
The Department of Commerce Research Centre provides a broad framework to guide scholarly research with the following objectives:

To create and promote a research culture among the faculty and students;

To ensure quality, integrity and ethics in research;

To identify research areas and specific research topics of academic and social significance;

To organize workshops/FDPs on research topics and on research methodology;

To serve as a facilitator providing research guidance to the research scholars of HBC or any other institution;

To publish research material in appropriate media and to make available such published information to the end users;

To facilitate the publication of reports submitted by the research scholars;
CONDUCT OF RESEARCH
The Management of Henry Baker College, Melukavu hereby affirms the following principles concerning research:

Research scholars shall be free to select the subject matter of their research, to seek support from respective legal financial source(s) for their work, and to arrive at their own concrete, relevant and substantial findings and conclusions and the same should be made available for peer’s scrutiny and criticism.

The Management shall create an environment conducive to research by providing suitable infrastructural facilities such as atmosphere, space, library, and funding (if available), by taking into account the educational merit, social relevance and significance of the proposed research.

The Management shall authorize the head of the Institution to initiate, promote and monitor the research activities in the Department of Commerce by constituting a Head for the Research Centre (the Head will be a faculty from Department of Commerce who is also a research guide). The Research centre will consist of university approved research guides of HBC as members along with one advisory member not below the rank of Associate Professor from any other reputed college/Institute.

Research techniques should not violate established professional ethics pertaining to the health, safety, privacy, and other personal rights of human beings.
RESEARCH POLICY
The Department of Commerce believes that research is the cornerstone of knowledge creation and dissemination. In the fast-paced business world, research provides a framework for refinement of existing business practices. Keeping this in mind, our research policy is to “Provide support to inquisitive minds.” i.e. to extend requisite support to the faculty, students and researchers in all aspects in pursuit of their quest for knowledge.
Our research centre follows the following core policies in promoting research culture:

All the Faculty members and students are encouraged to do research;

Faculty members shall be permitted to attend conferences/workshops relevant to their field of research in India or abroad with duty leave. The management shall reimburse the expenses relating to attending two such conferences/workshops in an academic year both for students and teachers;

The Department has Policy to reward high quality research publications. The Department will give Rs. 2000 as incentive to faculty members and PG students for publishing paper in a Scopus indexed/ Web of Science (Web of Knowledge) journals;

Faculty members are encouraged to apply for research projects from funding agencies or industries relevant to their field of interest.
