M.COM FINANCE & TAXATION (2 Years)

The HBC Department of Commerce started the M.Com program in the academic year 1999-2000. At present, this postgraduate program consists of 21 courses spread over 4 semesters. This program specifically covers the study of Specialized Accounting and Advanced Corporate Accounting, Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management, Management Optimizations Techniques, Methodology for Social Science Research and Quantitative Techniques, Marketing Management and Strategic Management, International Business and Finance, Strategic Financial Management, Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, Income Tax and Indirect Tax laws, Advanced Cost and Management Accounting, Derivatives & Risk Management, Personal Investment and Behavioural Finance.  It also contains a Project Report and a Comprehensive Viva Voce. The study of M.Com Degree gives an insight into commerce, management and economics. During the course of this study (i.e., from third semester onwards) and also after the successful completion of M.Com Degree program, a student can apply for the UGC-NET or JRF examination, which is an entry for the prospective candidates to become teachers of higher education institutions in India.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Admission to M.Com program is open to a student who holds a Bachelor Degree in Commerce subject (Minimum 3 years’ program) with at least 40% marks in aggregate. 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The duration of M.Com (Finance & Taxation) program is two academic years with four semesters. Total number of courses for the whole program is 20.

GRADUATE ATTRIBUTES

  • Strong problem-solving skills, good knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite, and Excel spreadsheet skills;
  • Research skills including the retrieval of information from variety of commerce, business, and economic sources;
  • Desire to develop professional skills and leadership skills;
  • Strong sense of work and other personality traits;
  • Skills in the use of ICT in commerce, business and management through practical assignments, exercises and demonstration;
  • Adequate Mathematical and Accountancy skills; and
  • Ability to analyze commerce and business issues in the domestic and international contexts.

After the completion of respective courses, we expect the following general attributes from our postgraduate students:

A commerce graduate can become an IRS, IAS, IFS, IPS, etc. Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, Cost and Management Accountant, Chartered Financial Analyst, CAIIB, Professor, Teacher in a Higher Secondary School, Entrepreneur, Banker, Accountant, Business Analyst, Business Executive, Finance Manager, Investment Analyst,  Marketing Manager, Financial Analyst, Treasurer, Fund Manager, Market Analyst, Securities Analyst, Operations Manager, Personal Finance Consultant, Risk Analyst, positions in other govt. jobs (SI, Panchayath Secretary, auditor, etc.), Labour Relations Specialists, Training and Development Manager, Cost Controller etc. If a commerce graduate wants to excel academically, then such a graduate can also appear for P.hD. Entrance examinations of various universities in India, UGC NET/JRF and SET examination of Govt. of Kerala.
