Rev. Henry Baker Jr.
The Apostle of Hills.

From Darkness into Marvellous Light

“Lead kindly light amid the encircling gloom, lead Thou me on,
The night is dark and I am far from home, lead Thou me on,
Keep Thou my feet , I do not ask to see,
The distant scen , one step enough for me.”

Rev.Henry Baker Jr.

Rev. Henry Baker Jr., the first CMS missionary came to Melukavu in 1848 to spread the gospel of love among the marginalized people. The tribal heads from Melukavu met Rev. Henry Baker in Kottayam and said, “ You must know, we know nothing right. Will you teach us or not? We die like beasts and are buried like dogs ! Ought you to neglect us ? Cholera and fever carried off members of our family. ” ( W.S.Hunt ) Rev. Henry Baker decided to spent the rest of his life time for educating the people and bringing them out from the darkness of ignorance to the marvelous light of knowledge.

Rev. Baker pioneered English education in the hills of Melukavu during his period of stay there. In the first phase the Churches served as centers of learning. The light of learning lit by him revolutionized the socio-economic fabric of a vast community to a life of self respect and recognition.

Henry Baker college upholds this beacon of learning and is meaningfully engaged in translating the great vision of the missionary by educating the marginalized people.
